Birds by Emily Furr
A solo exhibition of oil paintings by Emily Furr at Spoonbill Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina.
"I grew up in a little pink house in the woods on Johns Island, South Carolina, surrounded by the quiet hum of nature—foxes, rabbits, and birds. Wayward chickens and ducks would appear in our yard like familiar friends, on adventures for the day away from their nearby farms.
My childhood was spent with bare feet on grass, pinestraw, and sand and the bottoms of my dresses were always wet from romping along the shores of Charleston’s beaches, following tiny talon tracks pressed into the sand. Birds, in particular, held my fascination. Their delicate bones, their quick, knowing eyes, the way their bodies seemed to be made of air and light. Each species had its own personality—its own presence, its own quiet wisdom.
This collection of oil paintings is an homage to those early encounters and to that feeling of magic that surrounds birds."
